Belvoir's history dates nearly 350 years. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The bedrooms upstairs have breathtaking views. In the 18th century, visitors recorded seeing the Severn River from here.

Since its beginning, Belvoir was a working plantation. The fields were covered with rows of corn, tomatoes, and tobacco.

To this day the basement is a source of mystery. No one is quite sure how the space, with it's massive fireplace, was used. Perhaps it was a summer kitchen.

Historians agree the house was first built around 1736 by John Ross, register of the Land Office and great grandfather to Francis Scott Key.

At Belvoir manor, fancy ornaments are found inside and out. This door knocker leads the way to the grand foyer.

Perhaps this bell was used to signal the many farmhands who worked Belvoir's 144 acres.

The old barn is actually a 1926 pre-fabricated Sears catalog purchase. It's been modified to dry tobacco leaves.

Some historians suspect the portico's design is copied from the palladian windows at Mount Vernon and the porch at Gunston Hall, George Mason's Virginia plantation.

Over the years, Belvoir has been renovated many times. Porches and extensions have come and gone on both ends of the brick house.

Maryland's most prominent families have owned Belvoir at one time or another. The estate has played host to teas, card parties, fox hunts, and distinguished visitors from around the world.

Belvoir's original 1736 stone house features a gambrel roof. The rust-colored stone is local and contains iron. It's aptly named "ironstone."
